Where to go: Arusha, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park

Country: Tanzania

Tour Overview

Four days are enough to visit the elephant-rich landscapes of Tarangire, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater and explore Lake Manyara. This itinerary avoids long drives to the Serengeti and focuses on the parks nearest the northern safari gateway. Its straightforward route is particularly useful for travellers working around international flight dates.

On this part of the journey, the 4-day private safari follows Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park. Northern Tanzania private safari is the subject of this itinerary, with clear daily stops, named accommodation and prices that depend on travel dates and group size. You can use the daily outline to see where you travel, what wildlife areas you enter and how the overnight arrangements fit together.

For 4-Day Mid-Range Wilderness Safari, the stops follow the published programme, including an initial stay at Arusha Planet Lodge. Weather, park access and wildlife movement may change the exact driving route. Confirm dates, transfers and accommodation availability before booking.

Tour Highlights

  • Explore Tarangire National Park with a private driver-guide and flexible stops.
  • See how Ngorongoro Crater contrasts with the first wildlife area.
  • Follow the published route through 4 days of activities and transfers.
  • Stay in named lodges or tented camps selected for each overnight stop.
  • Travel at a measured pace, allowing for wildlife movement and road conditions.
  • Use date-based USD prices for your group size when planning the booking.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Arusha and prepare for safari

On arrival in Arusha, meet your safari guide and settle into the starting accommodation. The schedule keeps this destination as the centre of the day rather than making it a brief roadside visit. If you arrive late, keep the evening simple and allow enough time for rest before setting out in the safari vehicle. Arusha is the usual starting point for the northern safari circuit, with busy streets, established hotels and views towards Mount Meru when conditions are clear.

The itinerary has an order, but wildlife encounters can change how much time is best spent at each stop. Spend time looking beyond the nearest animal; groups of grazers often reveal activity across a much wider area.

Watch how the light changes across the land during the drive; the same view can look quite different in early and late afternoon. You can discuss preferred photography stops with the guide while keeping the day’s driving distance in mind.

You stay tonight at Arusha Planet Lodge. After the day’s activities, return to your lodge and check arrangements for tomorrow.

Day 2

Explore Tarangire National Park

Continue from Arusha towards Tarangire National Park, leaving time for the day’s scheduled visits. The plan for this stage is to spend enough time in the main area to appreciate its character. Tarangire has a broad mix of riverine woodland, old baobabs and open grass that gives the park a distinctive character. Elephants often draw attention here, though giraffe, zebra, buffalo and a wide variety of birds can also be encountered.

On this part of the journey, the driver may pause to identify tracks or bird calls, giving you a closer understanding of what lives in the area. Short breaks are useful on longer sections and give everyone a chance to stretch, drink water and take photographs.

Wildlife viewing needs patience; a quiet pause at the right place can be more rewarding than covering more kilometres. Morning and afternoon conditions may feel very different; pack layers that are useful during both.

You stay tonight at Eileen's Trees Inn. Once you have reached the overnight property, you can settle in and prepare for the next change of scenery.

Day 3

Explore Ngorongoro Crater

Continue from Tarangire National Park towards Ngorongoro Crater, leaving time for the day’s scheduled visits. Today concentrates on a different part of the route, with the journey arranged around the main destination. Buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and many other animals live or move across the crater floor. Black rhino sightings remain possible but uncommon. An early descent can make better use of the permitted time on the crater floor. The vehicle follows designated tracks between different habitats.

Your guide can suggest suitable stopping points according to the route, daylight and conditions on the ground. A sensible amount of time at each stop gives you opportunities to observe behaviour, rather than collecting quick photographs.

You stay tonight at Eileen's Trees Inn. The next stage may use different roads and habitats, so a brief conversation with your guide is worthwhile.

Day 4

Final Lake Manyara National Park visit and onward transfer

This is the closing day of the route. Enjoy the final planned outing before your guide arranges the onward transfer. The scenery changes again as you reach this stop on the northern Tanzania circuit. A drive that moves slowly through the groundwater forest can reveal wildlife that is easy to miss when travelling quickly. The high escarpment creates a strong backdrop, while the lake edge changes appearance as water levels rise and fall.

If conditions are clear, the broad views offer a good opportunity to understand the scale of the surrounding landscape. Some tracks can be muddy after rain. Your guide will choose accessible areas and adapt the game-drive length.

Keep a small day bag for drinking water, binoculars and a warm layer when the route reaches higher ground. Lake Manyara is a compact park below the Rift Valley escarpment, with forest, open areas and seasonal lake margins.

The itinerary closes today, with any extra night arranged separately if required.
