Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park

Your safari adventure begins with a morning pickup from your Dar es Salaam hotel or airport. You'll depart for Nyerere National Park (formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve), a journey of approximately 4 to 4.5 hours covering 208 kilometers through Tanzania's scenic countryside.

Upon arrival at your lodge or camp, check in and enjoy a hot lunch. In the afternoon, you'll embark on a boat safari along the Rufiji River—the lifeblood of Nyerere National Park. This unique experience offers a different perspective on wildlife viewing as you glide along the waterways. Look out for hippos wallowing in the shallows, crocodiles basking on the riverbanks, and a stunning variety of waterbirds. Elephants and buffalo often come to the river to drink, providing excellent photographic opportunities.

After the boat safari, return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Nyerere National Park

Day 2 – Full Day in Nyerere National Park

After breakfast, depart for a full day game drive in Nyerere National Park. This vast wilderness area—one of the largest protected areas in Africa—offers exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities in a remote and untouched setting.

Nyerere is home to large populations of elephants, buffalo, hippos, and crocodiles, along with lions, leopards, wild dogs, and a variety of antelope species including sable antelope, kudu, and impala. The park is also known for its remarkable birdlife, with over 400 species recorded.

You'll enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot within the park before continuing your game drive in the afternoon. As the day draws to a close, return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Note: Nyerere National Park is one of the few places in Tanzania where you can still experience wilderness in its most pristine form, with relatively low tourist numbers compared to the northern circuit parks.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Nyerere National Park

Day 3 – Nyerere to Mikumi National Park

After breakfast, check out from your accommodation and depart for Mikumi National Park. The journey takes approximately 8 to 9 hours covering 400 kilometers. This is a long transfer day, so you'll stop for lunch and refreshments along the way.

Upon arrival at Mikumi National Park, check into your lodge or camp. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity for a brief evening game drive or simply relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Mikumi National Park is often compared to the Serengeti, with its open savannah plains and abundant wildlife. The park is particularly famous for its large herds of buffalo, elephants, and giraffes. Enjoy dinner and overnight at your accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Mikumi National Park

Day 4 – Mikumi to Dar es Salaam

Your morning activity depends on the location of your accommodation:

If Staying Inside the Park

Enjoy an early morning game drive in Mikumi National Park. This is the best time to see wildlife at its most active, with excellent chances to spot elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeests, and various antelope species. Continue the game drive until around 9:00 AM, then return to your lodge for breakfast.

If Staying Outside the Park

Enjoy a guided walking tour in the areas surrounding the park. This offers a different perspective on the local ecosystem and a chance to learn about the flora and smaller wildlife that you might miss from a vehicle.

After your morning activity and breakfast, check out and depart for Dar es Salaam. The journey takes approximately 6 to 6.5 hours covering 300 kilometers. Arrive in Dar es Salaam by late afternoon, where your safari adventure concludes.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
