Detailed Itinerary

Your journey commences with a 7:00 AM departure from Kampala or Entebbe, heading westward toward Lake Mburo National Park. The drive covers approximately 244 kilometers and takes 4.5 to 5 hours. Along the way, you'll pause at the Equator crossing for a unique photo opportunity—standing with one foot in each hemisphere simultaneously. The route continues through rolling savannah grasslands dotted with rural settlements, plantations, and herds of the distinctive long-horned Ankole cattle, a breed endemic to this region.

Upon entering Lake Mburo National Park, you'll embark on an initial game drive to search for resident wildlife including zebra, hippopotamus, crocodile, eland, various antelope species, impala, and abundant birdlife. Following lunch, enjoy a two-hour boat excursion on Lake Mburo itself, where you'll observe aquatic wildlife at close range—hippos wallowing, crocodiles basking, and numerous waterbirds along the shoreline. After the boat cruise, you'll transfer to your accommodation for the evening.

You have two options for your day in Lake Mburo. You may enjoy a leisurely breakfast and depart for full-day game drives around 9:00 AM with packed lunch, returning to the lodge in the late afternoon around 6:00 PM. Alternatively, you can set out at 6:00 AM for an early morning game drive, return to camp for breakfast, relax briefly, then head out for an afternoon game drive with packed lunch.

During your game drives, you'll encounter wildlife such as zebra, hippo, crocodile, eland, antelope, impala, and a diverse array of bird species. Later in the afternoon, join a guided nature walk that leads to the salt lick area—a fascinating spot where you can observe multiple animal species simultaneously as they gather to consume the mineral-rich soil.

Following an early breakfast, you'll depart for the southwestern region of Uganda, heading toward Lake Bunyonyi. This stunning lake is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places in western Uganda. At 900 meters deep, it ranks as Africa's second-deepest lake and remains one of the few locations in the country where swimming is considered safe. The surrounding landscape features terraced hills rising dramatically from the water's edge. The name "Bunyonyi" translates to "place of little birds," and true to its name, the lake supports rich birdlife.

Upon arrival, you may arrange optional activities directly at your accommodation at additional cost. Options include community walks, canoe excursions, boat rides, bicycle tours, bird watching, and cray fishing.

You'll transfer to Bwindi National Park, with lunch provided upon arrival. The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours covering 65 to 100 kilometers.

In the afternoon, you have the option to participate in a Batwa cultural experience at an additional cost of $80 USD per person. This visit takes you through Batwa villages where you'll observe their daily routines and be amazed by their skillful hillside cultivation methods and their relationship with cattle, which serve as a primary source of pride within their community.

Your day begins early with breakfast at 6:30 AM. Carrying packed lunch, you'll proceed to the park headquarters by 7:30 AM to join other trackers for a comprehensive briefing on gorilla trekking protocols. Accompanied by experienced guides, you'll venture through dense undergrowth and thick creepers in search of the mountain gorillas—a trek that may last anywhere from one to eight hours depending on the gorillas' location. The steep, forested terrain is incredibly dense yet crisscrossed by numerous animal trails that facilitate access. Once the gorillas are located, you'll spend a precious hour observing them before transferring to the Ishasha Sector for overnight accommodation.

Following breakfast, you'll explore the Ishasha Sector, renowned for its tree-climbing lions. These remarkable predators lounge in the branches of fig trees, keeping a watchful eye on herds of Uganda kob—their preferred prey. You'll have an excellent chance to spot these unique lions before proceeding to your lodge.

In the afternoon, you'll embark on a boat cruise along the magnificent Kazinga Channel. This waterway offers close-range viewing of aquatic wildlife including hippos, buffalo, crocodiles, and elephants bathing along the channel banks. The shores also host a variety of bird species, including the iconic shoebill stork, pelican, and jacana.

After breakfast, you'll take a packed lunch and head out for a game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Here you'll search for Africa's famed "Big Five" as well as bushbuck, giant forest hog, antelope, waterbuck, and numerous bird species. Later in the afternoon, you'll transfer to Kibale Forest National Park, a journey of approximately 2 to 2.5 hours covering 110 kilometers.

After breakfast, you'll proceed to Kibale Forest. The chimpanzee tracking activity commences at 8:00 AM with a briefing on trekking regulations, after which you'll set off into the forest in search of chimpanzees. Kibale Forest National Park boasts the highest number of primate species in the world, with approximately 5,000 chimpanzees living wild in Uganda—making it an ideal location for observing these fascinating apes. An experienced ranger will guide your morning trek, and once the chimpanzees are located, you'll spend one hour with them before returning to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, you'll visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided swamp walk. This 2.5- to 3-hour excursion brings you closer to primates, particularly monkeys, as well as birds and butterflies. The wetland is a birder's paradise with approximately 138 species, best known for being home to the Great Blue Turaco. Good walking shoes are essential, as parts of the trail can be muddy. You may spot the elusive sitatunga antelope, the shoebill stork, or even chimpanzees. Other primate species include black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, red-tailed monkeys, l'Hoest's monkeys, blue monkeys, and olive baboons. Bushbuck and mongooses are also commonly seen. Bigodi Sanctuary is situated outside the park in Magombe Swamp.

After breakfast, you'll transfer to Murchison Falls National Park—a lengthy journey of 7 to 8 hours covering 389 kilometers. Upon arrival, you'll proceed directly to view the top and bottom of the magnificent falls, where the Nile River forces its way through a seven-meter gorge before plunging 45 meters. The numerous scenic viewpoints offer spectacular photographic opportunities, with the most impressive vista being the foaming waters thundering into the gorge with a deafening roar.

You'll depart at 6:30 AM, crossing to the northern bank of the Nile River for a sunrise game drive across the Nyamsika Plateau. Here you'll search for Cape buffalo, Rothschild's giraffe, Uganda kob, hartebeest, and waterbuck. You may also spot oribi, bushbuck, Bohor reedbuck, shy sitatunga, bush duiker, warthog, and bush pig, plus large carnivores including lion, leopard, and spotted hyena. Chimpanzee and olive baboon lead the list of six primate species found in the park, while crocodile and hippo are visible along the Nile's banks. Birdlife is abundant, with common sightings including goliath heron, Egyptian goose, pelican, bee-eater, kingfisher, hornbill, cormorant, saddle-bill stork, and the rare shoebill stork.

You'll return to your lodge for a late breakfast and some relaxation before embarking on an afternoon boat cruise upstream on the placid Victoria Nile toward the base of the falls. En route, you'll see hippo, crocodile, waterbuck, and a wide variety of birds, including the unusual shoebill stork. The boat stops just tens of meters from the "Devil's Cauldron," allowing for exceptional photographs of the photogenic Murchison Falls.

Following an early morning breakfast, you'll depart with cherished memories of your time at Murchison Falls. You'll drive to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where after a briefing from the ranger, you'll trek the sanctuary for approximately two hours in search of the resident rhinos. After lunch en route, you'll continue your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe, arriving by evening.

During August, Murchison Falls experiences mild and dry conditions. Daytime temperatures typically range from 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F), while nighttime temperatures drop to approximately 14°C to 18°C (57°F to 64°F). Rainfall is generally low, making it one of the drier periods of the year. Visitors can expect plenty of sunshine, with clear mornings and some cloud cover in the afternoons. August is considered an excellent time to explore the national park.

August at Lake Bunyonyi brings mild and pleasant weather. Temperatures range from approximately 12°C (54°F) at night to about 23°C (73°F) during the day. This period falls within the dry season, so rainfall is generally limited, though brief showers may still occur. Humidity levels are moderate, with a mix of sunny days and overcast skies. August is a favorable month for outdoor activities and exploring the scenic beauty of Lake Bunyonyi.

In August, Kibale experiences mild to warm weather. Temperatures typically range from approximately 15°C (59°F) during cooler mornings and evenings to about 25°C (77°F) during the day. August falls within the dry season, with rainfall generally less frequent compared to other months. Humidity levels tend to be moderate, making the overall climate comfortable for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing.

August brings warm temperatures and dry conditions to Lake Mburo. Daytime temperatures generally range from 23°C to 28°C (73°F to 82°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop to approximately 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F). This period falls within the dry season, so rainfall is typically low—making it an excellent time for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities. Humidity levels are moderate, and sunny days are common.
